Using These Products? You’re Sabotaging Your Spray Tan

🚫 Ingredients That Ruin Your Spray Tan (and What to Use Instead!)

You just got the perfect spray tan — glowing, even, and flawless. The last thing you want is to accidentally strip it away with the wrong products. Unfortunately, many common ingredients in skincare and body products can break down your tan faster than you'd think.

Here’s what to avoid if you want your glow to last:

❌ 1. Sulfates (SLS/SLES)

These are harsh detergents found in many body washes and shampoos. They create a foamy lather but also strip your skin — and your tan — of its color.

Look for: sulfate-free or “gentle” cleansers.

❌ 2. Alcohol

Often hiding in toners, astringents, and sprays, alcohol dries out your skin and fades your tan unevenly. It can cause patchiness and make your glow look dull.

Look for: alcohol-free alternatives or hydrating mists instead.

❌ 3. Mineral Oil & Petroleum-Based Products

These create a barrier on your skin that can cause your tan to fade unevenly or even prevent it from developing properly if used beforehand.

Look for: lightweight oils like jojoba or coconut, or use products labeled “spray tan safe.”

❌ 4. Fragrance & Synthetic Dyes

Heavily fragranced lotions or those with added dyes can cause irritation or uneven fading. They’re especially risky right after your tan.

Look for: fragrance-free or naturally scented products made for sensitive skin.

❌ 5. Acids (AHA, BHA, Salicylic, Glycolic)

These exfoliate the skin — great for brightening, terrible for keeping a spray tan. Using them will dramatically speed up fading.

Look for: hydrating serums without exfoliants during the life of your tan.

🧴 Pro Tip: Stick to a spray tan-safe moisturizer daily. Hydrated skin holds a tan longer, fades more evenly, and looks glowier overall.

If you’re unsure whether a product is spray tan-safe, ask your spray tan artist (me!) or check the label for “gentle,” “hydrating,” or “sulfate-free.”
